Unexpected side effect of fires?
13th-Feb-2009 02:15 pm
bjj_moves: this morning goldengrove asked me to check out a thumping noise in the laundry.
I went into the kitchen and discovered one of those dove/pigeon things was inside.
I thought mabye the bead curtain had fallen down or something
So I got a towel and caught him and went to put him outside.
As I did so I noticed that just outside the bead curtain was a raptor
like a kestrel or a kite or something bout a foot or a foot and a half high.
I tried to take a photo but he ran away...
might have been a brown or grey goshawk, seems to be the closest looking thing I can find.

I'm guessing it was probably driven into Melbourne by the fires, but I'll be curious if it stays. I know there are some predator birds in Melbourne, but not usually anything that big.

So - did you feed it the pigeon?

I was already at work... but I would have let the pigeon outside - it might be a native one, but it can take its chances :)

Good to see, especially on Darwin's birthday :-)

As I took it outside the raptor retreated to the safety of the back fence.
I let the pigeon go and it drunkenly stumbled off and then took flight and the raptor watched it go on its merry way. Maybe if I had gone back inside straight away it would have got up the courage to have a go...
