  1. Last november, my lcd screen died, bought a new one
  2. December: after a power outage, primary drive failed. Came good after letting it cool off
  3. Jan 22nd: bigpond decide i don't really need all my bandwidth this month
  4. Jan 25: while i was at arc, my second drive seemed to start erroring and die.
  5. Jan 28: just before going to arc for the last day, new lcd flickers and dies.. or not, it seems to be the video card
  6. Jan 29: figuring all this seems to be b/c of the motherboard, snap, buy new pc.
    1. Its too new, I don't have sata drivers in my boot disk.
    2. Can't find them online...
    3. can't successfully build them...
    4. can't put in a different sata card that i do have drivers for...
    5. download the testing iso...
      1. didn't burn properly...
      2. oh there wasn't enough space on that partition, so it was only half of it...
      3. oh, the initial download only got 1/2 of it due to 2.1G limit on file descriptors...
      4. This download did the same...
    6. Finally installed, put everything back together
  7. LCD monitor dies again....
  8. Fuck this, go to work, steal one as a temp measure... it dies 20 mins into using it

I am currently using a crappy old crt monitor and hunting for the receipt. In the meantime I have no sound, but that might be because its turned off in the bios. Also, the NFS mounted drives seem to have a 3 second lag when you try and ls them, and I can't figure out why. (EDIT: Apparently this is a 'feature'. Its off now)

So much for my relaxing weekend off after Arcanacon.

EDIT: because my desktop was dead, I got 2000 spams straight into the inbox this week - if i didn't reply to something you sent me, its possible I deleted it when doing cleaning. Feel free to bug me again.

Your LCD fatality rate concerns me. Are you sure you don't have a power fault somewhere along the chain? A power cable maybe? Or heaven forbid a graphics card? (not trying to make you paranoid here, just trying to throw out suggestions)

We're in Mt Waverley, home of the power spike. However, it has to be said that the Benq (first one) ran for several years, constantly, before dying, and that the one from work was probably not being used because it was busted.

While I feel for you (really!) I couldn't help but laugh when I hit number 8...

I must admit, so did I. Although it was the highpitched, nervous sociopath kind of laugh as I stared at the powered-down screen

I can almost hear the Psycho music in the background... :-)

Sounds about right. You should be using vendor supported proprietry software. It never has problems like that.

At the moment I am trying not to touch anything... for the last 8 weeks or so everything I touch stops working. Phones. Computers. Cars. Whitegoods. I'm turning into a neo-luddite.

Eventually your touch will return, and everything will work for a while. For the moment however, you are so screwed.
